How the conversion works

Per-section CEFR, lowest section wins overall

TCF reports four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Each maps to a CEFR level using the published France Education International scale. The overall result is reported as the lowest section level.

1.

Identify your section scale

Listening and Reading use 0 to 699 (computer-marked multiple-choice). Writing and Speaking use 0 to 20 (human-rated). Both scales target the same CEFR bands.

2.

Map each section to CEFR

L / R: 600+ = C2, 500-599 = C1, 400-499 = B2, 300-399 = B1, 200-299 = A2, 100-199 = A1. W / S: 18-20 = C2, 16-17 = C1, 14-15 = B2, 10-13 = B1, 6-9 = A2, 4-5 = A1.

3.

Take the lowest section as your effective level

For most institutional and immigration purposes, the effective CEFR is the floor across the four sections. The exception is per-skill banded points (Quebec PRTQ, Canada CRS) where each section earns separate points.

Background

TCF: many versions, one scale

Two things to understand before reading either result.

TCF: official, repeatable, 2-year validity

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Francais) is administered by France Education International on behalf of the French Ministry of National Education. Multiple versions: Tout Public, DAP (university), Canada, Quebec, IRN (citizenship). Same dual scale across versions; valid 2 years.

Use the TCF Score Calculator to compute a per-section CEFR mapping from raw TCF scores under the official France Education International bands.

CEFR: the European reference framework

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages defines six broad levels of language proficiency, A1 through C2. TCF reports per-section CEFR alongside the numeric score; the effective overall CEFR is the lowest section level for most institutional and immigration uses.

Reference table

TCF section score to CEFR level

Per France Education International. Each section is mapped independently.

Listening / ReadingWriting / SpeakingCEFRWhat this section unlocks
600 to 699 18 to 20 C2 Top academic / translation positions
500 to 599 16 to 17 C1 Most French postgraduate, professional French use
400 to 499 14 to 15 B2 French undergraduate (DAP), Quebec PRTQ oral max points
300 to 399 10 to 13 B1 French citizenship from January 2026 (TCF IRN B1)
200 to 299 6 to 9 A2 French citizenship until December 2025 (TCF IRN A2)
100 to 199 4 to 5 A1 Initial residence permits, family reunification

All TCF versions share the same per-section scale. Scores below 100 / 4 fall below A1 and are not certified.

Per use case

Which TCF version goes with which use case

The CEFR conversion is identical, but the TCF version you book matters. Booking the wrong version can mean repeating the test.

French citizenship (naturalisation)
TCF IRN only

Only the specific TCF Integration Resident Naturalisation (TCF IRN) is accepted; standard TCF Tout Public is NOT accepted. Threshold: A2 in L+S until December 2025, B1 in L+S from January 2026. Alternative: DELF A2 / B1.

French university (non-EU undergrad)
TCF DAP or DELF B2

TCF DAP (with the mandatory Writing section) or DELF B2 / DALF C1 are accepted. TCF Tout Public is generally NOT accepted for DAP applications. Minimum threshold typically B2 (400+ L / R; 14+ W / S).

Canadian Express Entry (PR)
TCF Canada only

IRCC accepts TCF Canada and TEF Canada (NOT TCF Tout Public, NOT DELF / DALF). Per-section CLB points are awarded; B2 (CLB 7+) typically targeted for federal Express Entry. Valid 2 years from test date.

Quebec immigration (PRTQ / PSTQ)
TCF Quebec or TEFAQ

Quebec accepts TCF Quebec and TEFAQ; both award MIFI points per oral skill. B2 (TCF 400+ Listening; 14+ Speaking) typically yields the maximum oral points.

French universities (non-EU postgrad)
TCF Tout Public usually accepted

For Etudes en France postgraduate applications, TCF Tout Public results are typically accepted at B2 / C1 thresholds. DALF C1 is universally preferred for selective programs and has lifetime validity.

Belgian / Swiss French-region universities
TCF Tout Public typically accepted

Universities in Wallonia, Brussels, and Romandie typically accept TCF Tout Public at B2 thresholds. DELF B2 is the most universally accepted alternative.

Frequently asked

TCF to CEFR questions, answered

How do I convert my TCF score to a CEFR level?

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Francais) uses a dual scale: Listening and Reading sections are scored 0 to 699; Writing and Speaking sections are scored 0 to 20. Each section converts to a CEFR level independently. For Listening / Reading: 600+ = C2, 500 to 599 = C1, 400 to 499 = B2, 300 to 399 = B1, 200 to 299 = A2, 100 to 199 = A1. For Writing / Speaking: 18 to 20 = C2, 16 to 17 = C1, 14 to 15 = B2, 10 to 13 = B1, 6 to 9 = A2, 4 to 5 = A1. Your effective CEFR level is the lowest of the four section levels.

What are the different versions of TCF, and which should I take?

TCF Tout Public is the standard general-purpose version, accepted at most universities and for general use. TCF DAP is for non-EU undergraduate admission to French universities (with mandatory Listening, Reading, and Writing sections). TCF Canada is the version accepted by IRCC for Canadian Permanent Residency (Express Entry). TCF Quebec is for Quebec immigration (PRTQ / PSTQ). TCF Integration Resident Naturalisation (TCF IRN) is the only TCF version accepted for French citizenship; it tests Listening and Speaking only at A1 to B1 levels. The CEFR conversion of section scores is the same across all versions.

How long is a TCF certificate valid?

TCF results are valid for 2 years from the test date for most institutional and immigration uses, including French universities, Canadian Express Entry (IRCC), and Quebec immigration. After 2 years you must retake the test. This is a key difference from DELF / DALF, which is valid for life. If you want a long-term French language certificate, take DELF or DALF; if you need a fast, repeatable test for specific immigration or admission deadlines, take TCF.

Can I use TCF for French citizenship?

Only the specific TCF Integration Resident Naturalisation (TCF IRN) version is accepted for French naturalisation; standard TCF Tout Public is NOT accepted. Since 2020 the threshold has been A2 in Listening AND Speaking; from January 2026 it rises to B1 in Listening AND Speaking. Alternatively, a DELF A2 or B1 diploma satisfies the requirement (and DELF is valid for life, while TCF IRN is valid for 2 years). Verify the current threshold with your prefecture before booking.

What is the effective CEFR level if my section levels differ?

Your effective CEFR level is the lowest of the four section CEFR levels. If you score B2 in Reading, B1 in Listening, B1 in Writing, and A2 in Speaking, your effective level is A2. This is how French universities, Quebec immigration, and IRCC Canada interpret results: a candidate with mixed levels is treated as the weakest section. The exception is when an authority awards points per skill (Quebec PRTQ, Canada CRS) where each section earns its own band points; in that case all four section levels matter independently.

Why does the TCF use two different scales (699 vs 20)?

Listening and Reading are scored by computer (multiple-choice items), so they support a fine-grained 0 to 699 scale where every additional correct item contributes a defined number of points. Writing and Speaking are scored by trained human raters using rubrics, with a coarser 0 to 20 scale that matches the granularity human raters can reliably distinguish. Both scales align to the same CEFR bands; the dual format reflects the test-design realities of automated vs human scoring.

Is TCF accepted by all French universities?

For non-EU undergraduate admission, French universities require either TCF DAP (with the mandatory Writing section) or DELF B2 / DALF C1. TCF Tout Public is generally NOT accepted for the DAP process; you must specifically take TCF DAP. For postgraduate admission via Etudes en France, TCF Tout Public results are typically accepted. Always verify with the specific university and program. The minimum threshold is usually B2 (TCF score 400+ in Listening and Reading; 14+ in Writing and Speaking).

Should I take TCF or TEF?

For Canadian Express Entry: both TCF Canada and TEF Canada are accepted by IRCC; choose based on test centre availability and personal preference for the test format. For French citizenship: both TCF IRN and TEF Naturalisation are accepted (or DELF). For French university admission: TCF DAP and TEF are both accepted at many universities; verify with the registrar. For Quebec immigration: TEFAQ and TCF Quebec are both accepted. The two tests have similar difficulty and similar format; the main differences are administering body (France Education International for TCF; Chambre de Commerce et d Industrie de Paris for TEF) and per-region test centre availability.
