PTE to IELTS Converter

PTE Academic and IELTS measure overlapping academic English skills, so they map indicatively. Per Pearson concordance research: PTE 86 to 90 = IELTS 9.0; PTE 79 to 85 = IELTS 8.0 to 8.5; PTE 73 to 78 = IELTS 7.5; PTE 65 to 72 = IELTS 7.0; PTE 58 to 64 = IELTS 6.5; PTE 50 to 57 = IELTS 6.0; PTE 42 to 49 = IELTS 5.5. The conversion is approximate; PTE Academic uses an integrated scoring model that weighs different skills together, so the mapping should be used as a sanity check, not as proof of equivalence.

Mostly, but with notable exceptions. PTE Academic is accepted by all Australian universities, the Australian government for Permanent Residence, the UK Home Office for student and work visas, the New Zealand government for visas, and over 3,500 institutions worldwide. The most common gaps: some Canadian universities still prefer IELTS, Canadian Permanent Residence (Express Entry) does NOT accept PTE Academic (only IELTS GT, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core), and some US graduate programs (especially older or more conservative departments) only accept TOEFL or IELTS. Always verify with the specific program.

Two different tests for two different purposes. PTE Academic is for university admission, professional registration, and most visa categories. PTE Core is a general English test, designed by Pearson primarily to gain Canadian Express Entry acceptance (it became IRCC-approved in 2024). For Canadian Permanent Residence, take PTE Core; PTE Academic is NOT accepted by IRCC. For Australian PR or university admission, take PTE Academic; PTE Core is not the standard there. The two tests have different formats and different scoring.

Two reasons. First, the test is fully computer-delivered, including Speaking (recorded responses scored by AI, not a human interviewer). This avoids interview scheduling and human grading time. Second, the AI scoring engine returns results in 2 business days for most candidates (sometimes 5 days for newer test centres). IELTS results take 3 to 5 days for computer-delivered or 13 days for paper-based. For tight application deadlines or visa renewals, PTE Academic is often the practical pick.

Australian PR uses a per-skill PTE threshold (not overall). Per the Department of Home Affairs as of August 2025: Competent English requires PTE 50 in each skill (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing), equivalent to IELTS 6.0 across the board. Proficient English requires PTE 65 each (IELTS 7.0 each), worth 10 points on the points test. Superior English requires PTE 79 each (IELTS 8.0 each), worth 20 points. The points difference between Proficient and Superior is significant for skilled migration thresholds.

Both are accepted by the Australian government for student visas (subclass 500) and by all Australian universities. PTE advantages: faster results (2 days), fully computer-delivered, AI Speaking scoring (no interview anxiety), and flexible test slots (often available within a week). IELTS advantages: longer test history, more familiar to many candidates, and paper-based option if you prefer handwriting. For Australia-only goals, PTE is often the practical pick. For multi-country plans (UK, Canada, US), IELTS gives broader acceptance.

PTE uses an integrated scoring model: a single response often contributes to multiple skill scores. For example, a Speaking response is scored for both Speaking and for sub-skills like Pronunciation and Oral Fluency, which feed into other skill scores. IELTS uses isolated section scoring: each skill is scored only on its own section. This means PTE rewards balanced performance across skills, while IELTS rewards strong performance in each section independently. The conversion table averages across these differences but is approximate.

Not easier, but different. Many candidates find PTE Speaking less stressful (no human interviewer; you record into a microphone). Many find PTE Writing harder because of the strict word counts and the AI scoring of grammar and vocabulary. Reading and Listening often feel similar. The test format favours candidates comfortable with computer-based testing and AI scoring; it disadvantages candidates who rely on human empathy in Speaking interviews.
