How the conversion works

Per-section CEFR with sub-bands, lowest section wins overall

TEF reports four section scores on a unified 0 to 699 scale. Each maps to a CEFR level with a sub-band (A2+, B1+, B2+, C1+) using the published CCIP scale. The overall result is the lowest section level.

1.

Find your TEF section score

Each section is reported on the same 0 to 699 scale: Listening (Compr. orale), Reading (Compr. ecrite), Writing (Expression ecrite), Speaking (Expression orale).

2.

Map to CEFR with the sub-band

549 to 699 = C1+. 503 to 548 = C1. 462 to 502 = B2+. 434 to 461 = B2. 398 to 433 = B1+. 369 to 397 = B1. 331 to 368 = A2+. 249 to 330 = A2. 181 to 248 = A1.

3.

Take the lowest section as your effective level

For most institutional uses, the effective CEFR is the floor across the four sections. The exception is per-skill banded points (Quebec PRTQ, Canada CRS) where each section earns separate points.

Background

TEF: many versions, one unified scale

Two things to understand before reading either result.

TEF: official, repeatable, 2-year validity

The TEF (Test d Evaluation de Francais) is administered by the Chambre de Commerce et d Industrie de Paris (CCIP) through Le Francais des Affaires. Multiple versions: TEF Canada, TEFAQ (Quebec), TEF Naturalisation (citizenship), TEF Etudes (university). Same unified 0 to 699 scale across versions; valid 2 years.

Use the TEF Score Calculator to compute per-section CEFR mapping from raw TEF scores under the official CCIP bands.

CEFR: the European reference framework

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages defines six broad levels of language proficiency, A1 through C2. The TEF reports per-section CEFR alongside the numeric score, with sub-bands (A2+, B1+, B2+, C1+) for finer granularity. The effective overall CEFR is the lowest section level for most institutional and immigration uses.

Per the CCIP via Le Francais des Affaires. Each section maps independently.

TEF Score (per section)CEFR sub-bandParent CEFRWhat this section unlocks
549 to 699 C1+ C1 (top) Top postgraduate, approaching C2 territory
503 to 548 C1 C1 Most French postgraduate programs
462 to 502 B2+ B2 (top) Stronger postgraduate access, professional French use
434 to 461 B2 B2 French undergraduate threshold (DAP), Quebec PRTQ max oral points
398 to 433 B1+ B1 (top) Stronger pathway / vocational programs
369 to 397 B1 B1 French citizenship from January 2026 (TEF Naturalisation B1)
331 to 368 A2+ A2 (top) Stronger initial residence permits
249 to 330 A2 A2 French citizenship until December 2025 (TEF Naturalisation A2)
181 to 248 A1 A1 Initial residence permits, family reunification

Sub-bands (A2+, B1+, B2+, C1+) round down to the parent CEFR level for most institutional uses (B2+ counts as B2). Per-skill points (Quebec, Canada) use the actual numeric score.

Per use case

Which TEF version goes with which use case

The CEFR conversion is identical, but the TEF version you book matters. Booking the wrong version can mean repeating the test.

French citizenship (naturalisation)
TEF Naturalisation only

Only the specific TEF Naturalisation version is accepted; standard TEF Canada is NOT accepted. Threshold: A2 in L+S until December 2025, B1 in L+S from January 2026. Alternative: DELF A2 / B1.

Canadian Express Entry (PR)
TEF Canada only

IRCC accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada (NOT standard TEF, NOT DELF / DALF). Per-section CLB points awarded; B2 (CLB 7+) typically targeted for federal Express Entry. Valid 2 years from test date.

Quebec immigration (PRTQ / PSTQ)
TEFAQ or TCF Quebec

Quebec accepts TEFAQ (Listening + Speaking) and TCF Quebec; both award MIFI points per oral skill. B2 (TEF 434+ Listening; 434+ Speaking) typically yields the maximum oral points.

French university (non-EU undergrad)
TEF Etudes or DELF B2

TEF Etudes (with all four mandatory sections) or DELF B2 / DALF C1 are accepted alongside TCF DAP. Minimum threshold typically B2 (TEF 434+ in Reading and Writing).

French universities (non-EU postgrad)
TEF Canada / Etudes typically accepted

For Etudes en France postgraduate applications, TEF Canada or TEF Etudes results are typically accepted at B2 / C1 thresholds. DALF C1 is universally preferred for selective programs and has lifetime validity.

Belgian / Swiss French-region universities
TEF Canada typically accepted

Universities in Wallonia, Brussels, and Romandie typically accept TEF Canada at B2 thresholds. DELF B2 is the most universally accepted alternative.

Frequently asked

TEF to CEFR questions, answered

How do I convert my TEF score to a CEFR level?

The TEF (Test d Evaluation de Francais) reports all four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) on a unified 0 to 699 scale. The published Chambre de Commerce et d Industrie de Paris (CCIP) bands are: 549 to 699 = C1+ (covers C1 and approaches C2 territory). 503 to 548 = C1. 462 to 502 = B2+. 434 to 461 = B2. 398 to 433 = B1+. 369 to 397 = B1. 331 to 368 = A2+. 249 to 330 = A2. 181 to 248 = A1. Each section maps independently. Your effective overall CEFR is the lowest of the four section levels.

What are the different versions of TEF?

TEF Canada is the version accepted by IRCC for Canadian Permanent Residency (Express Entry); it tests four sections, all 0 to 699. TEFAQ is for Quebec immigration (PRTQ / PSTQ); it tests Listening and Speaking only. TEF Naturalisation is for French citizenship; it tests Listening and Speaking only at A1 to B1 levels. TEF Etudes (formerly TEF DAP) is for non-EU undergraduate admission to French universities; it tests Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The CEFR conversion of section scores is the same across all versions.

How long is a TEF certificate valid?

TEF results are valid for 2 years from the test date for most institutional and immigration uses, including French universities, IRCC Express Entry (Canada), and Quebec immigration. After 2 years you must retake the test. This is a key difference from DELF / DALF, which is valid for life. If you want a long-term French language certificate, take DELF or DALF; if you need a fast, repeatable test for specific deadlines, take TEF.

Can I use TEF for French citizenship?

Only the specific TEF Naturalisation version is accepted for French naturalisation; standard TEF Canada or TEFAQ is NOT accepted. Since 2020 the threshold has been A2 in Listening AND Speaking; from January 2026 it rises to B1 in Listening AND Speaking. Alternatively, a DELF A2 or B1 diploma satisfies the requirement (and DELF is valid for life, while TEF Naturalisation is valid for 2 years). Verify the current threshold with your prefecture before booking.

What is the effective CEFR level if my section levels differ?

For most institutional and immigration purposes, your effective CEFR level is the lowest of the four section CEFR levels. If you score B2 in Reading, B1+ in Listening, B1+ in Writing, and B1 in Speaking, your effective level is B1. The exception is when an authority awards points per skill (Quebec PRTQ, Canada CRS) where each section earns its own band points; in that case all four section levels matter independently and contribute to your total points.

Why does the TEF use sub-bands like B2+ and B1+?

The CCIP designed the TEF with sub-bands (A1, A2, A2+, B1, B1+, B2, B2+, C1, C1+) to give finer granularity than CEFR alone. The plus level represents the upper portion of the CEFR band (e.g., B2+ is the top of B2, approaching C1). For most institutional uses the sub-band rounds down to the parent CEFR level (B2+ = B2; C1+ = C1). For Quebec immigration and IRCC Canada, the per-section TEF score is what matters, not the sub-band label.

Is TEF accepted by all French universities?

For non-EU undergraduate admission, French universities require either TEF Etudes (with all four mandatory sections) or DELF B2 / DALF C1, alongside TCF DAP. TEF Etudes results above 434 in Reading and Writing typically qualify for B2-equivalent admission. Always verify with the specific university and program. For postgraduate admission via Etudes en France, TEF Canada or TEF Etudes results are typically accepted at B2 / C1 thresholds.

Should I take TEF or TCF?

For Canadian Express Entry: both TEF Canada and TCF Canada are accepted by IRCC; choose based on test centre availability and personal preference. Many candidates report TEF Canada is slightly faster to book in major Canadian cities while TCF Canada is more available in francophone Africa. For French citizenship: both TEF Naturalisation and TCF IRN are accepted (or DELF). For Quebec immigration: both TEFAQ and TCF Quebec are accepted. The two tests have similar difficulty and similar format; TEF uses a unified 0 to 699 scale across all four skills, while TCF uses a dual scale (0 to 699 for L / R, 0 to 20 for W / S).
