How IELTS overall band is calculated

The overall band is calculated by averaging your four section band scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Then the result is rounded to the nearest half band (0.5).

  • Example: (7.0 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.5) / 4 = 6.5
  • Example: (6.0 + 6.0 + 6.5 + 6.5) / 4 = 6.25 → 6.5
  • Example: (6.5 + 6.5 + 7.0 + 7.0) / 4 = 6.75 → 7.0

IELTS overall band calculator (quick guide)

This free IELTS overall band calculator helps you estimate your overall IELTS band score from your four section scores: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section is typically reported in steps of 0.5 (for example: 6.0, 6.5, 7.0).

Rounding rule

Because each section is in 0.5 steps, your average can land on values like 6.125, 6.250, or 6.750. IELTS overall is rounded to the nearest 0.5:

  • x.00 – x.24 → rounds down to x.0
  • x.25 – x.74 → rounds to x.5
  • x.75 – x.99 → rounds up to (x + 1).0

What your IELTS overall band score means

Your overall IELTS band is a single score that summarizes your performance across all four sections. Many universities, employers, and immigration programs set minimum requirements like “overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0”. Use this calculator to quickly check your overall band and understand how rounding affects the final result.

IELTS Academic vs General Training

The overall calculation method is the same for Academic and General Training. The key difference is the content of the Reading and Writing sections, not the averaging formula.

Common overall band examples

Section bands Average Rounded overall
6.0 / 6.0 / 6.5 / 6.5 6.25 6.5
6.5 / 6.5 / 7.0 / 7.0 6.75 7.0
7.0 / 6.5 / 6.0 / 6.5 6.50 6.5

Tips to improve your overall band

  • Listening: practice with time pressure and review transcripts to learn patterns.
  • Reading: build skimming/scanning habits and track why wrong answers are wrong.
  • Writing: focus on task response and clarity; get feedback on structure and grammar.
  • Speaking: record yourself, improve fluency, and expand topic vocabulary.
