Your DELE Diploma
Select the DELE level shown on your diploma.
DELE was designed as a CEFR test
Unlike numeric tests that require a conversion table, DELE is itself a CEFR exam. Each diploma corresponds to one CEFR level by design, so the mapping is exact and 1:1.
Read your diploma
The DELE diploma states the level (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2). That letter and number IS the CEFR level. No table needed.
Match the CEFR band
A1 and A2 are Basic User; B1 and B2 are Independent User; C1 and C2 are Proficient User. The band tells employers and admissions teams the broad proficiency category.
Check the per-use-case requirements
CEFR equivalence is recognised everywhere, but two Spanish use cases require DELE specifically (not just an equivalent CEFR score from another test): citizenship requires DELE A2, medical residency requires DELE C1 or higher.
DELE and CEFR: the certificate and the scale
Two definitions to keep separate.
DELE: a level-specific Spanish diploma
The DELE (Diplomas de Espanol como Lengua Extranjera) is the official Spanish-language certification, jointly run by the Instituto Cervantes and the University of Salamanca on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. Six diplomas, one per CEFR level, taken individually. Pass / fail per level. Certificate is valid for life.
Use the DELE Score Calculator to check your pass / fail status under the strict 60/100 + 30/50 per-group rule before you read off the CEFR equivalence below.
CEFR: the European reference scale
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001) defines six proficiency levels (A1 to C2) used across all European languages. CEFR is the universal ruler; DELE is one specific Spanish-language measurement against that ruler.
Compare with the SIELE to CEFR Converter if you took SIELE instead, or with SIELE to DELE if you need to translate between the two Spanish certificates.
DELE level to CEFR (1:1)
Per the Instituto Cervantes diploma specifications. Each DELE diploma corresponds to exactly one CEFR level.
| DELE Diploma | CEFR | CEFR Band | What this unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| DELE A1 | A1 | Basic User | Initial Spanish residence permits, basic tourism, simple exchanges |
| DELE A2 | A2 | Basic User | Spanish citizenship by naturalisation (specifically required by law) |
| DELE B1 | B1 | Independent User | Foundation programs, work permits, au-pair, vocational training |
| DELE B2 | B2 | Independent User | Spanish university undergraduate admission (standard threshold) |
| DELE C1 | C1 | Proficient User | Spanish medical residency (MIR), most postgraduate programs, professional licensure |
| DELE C2 | C2 | Proficient User | Top academic positions, translation / interpretation work, MIR alternative to C1 |
DELE C2 was historically branded as DALE (Diploma de Acreditacion del Lenguaje Espanol) in some materials but is now standardised as DELE C2.
What each DELE level unlocks in practice
CEFR equivalence is the universal currency, but Spanish institutions sometimes name DELE specifically by law. Two cases require DELE; everything else accepts the CEFR equivalent from any aligned test.
The Spanish naturalisation law (Real Decreto 1004/2015) names DELE A2 as the language certificate for non-Spanish-speaking applicants. A SIELE A2-equivalent score is NOT accepted. Citizens of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt entirely.
The Spanish Ministry of Health requires DELE for non-Spanish-speaking foreign-trained doctors applying to MIR. SIELE C1-equivalent score is NOT accepted. Affects all foreign-trained physicians applying to placements in Spain.
All 76 CRUE Spanish public and private universities accept DELE B2 for undergraduate admission, alongside SIELE B2-equivalent scores. The threshold is set by CRUE for non-EU applicants.
Most Spanish master's and doctoral programs require DELE C1, accepting SIELE C1-equivalent scores interchangeably. Some highly competitive Sciences and Medicine programs require DELE specifically.
Universities under the Asociacion Universitaria Iberoamericana de Postgrado accept DELE at the corresponding CEFR level. UNAM (Mexico) and UBA (Argentina) co-administer SIELE and accept either certificate.
Employers worldwide treat DELE as proof of Spanish proficiency at the certified CEFR level. The lifetime validity of DELE is often preferred for permanent personnel records.
DELE to CEFR questions, answered
How do I convert my DELE level to a CEFR level?
DELE diplomas map 1:1 to the CEFR scale by design. DELE A1 = CEFR A1, DELE A2 = CEFR A2, DELE B1 = CEFR B1, DELE B2 = CEFR B2, DELE C1 = CEFR C1, DELE C2 = CEFR C2. There is no numeric conversion: the diploma you hold IS the CEFR level. The Instituto Cervantes designed DELE specifically as level-specific certification of CEFR proficiency in Spanish.
Is the DELE certificate accepted as proof of CEFR level?
Yes, universally. DELE is one of only two CEFR-aligned Spanish certificates (the other is SIELE). Spanish universities, Spanish government immigration services, EU institutions, and employers worldwide accept DELE as direct proof of the certified CEFR level. The diploma never expires.
Does DELE A2 satisfy Spanish citizenship language requirements?
Yes, DELE A2 specifically is the language certificate named in the Spanish naturalisation law (Real Decreto 1004/2015). Citizens of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt and do not need to present DELE. For all other applicants, DELE A2 (or higher) is required, and a SIELE A2-equivalent score is NOT accepted as a substitute.
Is DELE C1 enough for Spanish medical residency (MIR)?
Yes. The Spanish Ministry of Health requires DELE C1 or DELE C2 for non-Spanish-speaking foreign-trained doctors applying to Medico Interno Residente (MIR) placements. SIELE C1-equivalent score is NOT accepted; the requirement specifically names DELE. Doctors trained in Spanish-speaking countries are typically exempt.
How long is a DELE certificate valid?
DELE certificates never expire. Once you pass, the diploma is yours for life and remains valid as proof of the certified CEFR level decades later. This is in contrast to SIELE, which expires after 5 years. The lifetime validity is one of the main reasons applicants choose DELE for permanent records like citizenship, professional licensure, and academic credentials.
Who administers the DELE exam?
DELE is jointly administered by the Instituto Cervantes (which sets policy and runs the global exam centre network) and the University of Salamanca (which designs the test and grades the open-response sections). The diploma is issued in the name of Spain's Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, giving it official government backing.
What is the difference between DELE and CEFR?
CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the scale: A1 (Breakthrough) through C2 (Mastery), six levels, language-agnostic. DELE is the Spanish-language test that certifies a candidate at a specific CEFR level. CEFR is the ruler; DELE is the measurement. When someone says they have DELE B2, they have passed the Spanish CEFR B2 exam.
Can I take DELE at a higher level than I have certified before?
Yes, you can take any DELE level at any time, regardless of which levels you have already passed. There is no requirement to climb the ladder. Many candidates skip directly from no certification to DELE B2 or DELE C1 if their goal is university admission or professional use. Your DELE A1 certificate is not invalidated when you later pass DELE C1; both diplomas remain valid for life.
