SIELE and DELE share the CEFR scale
Both tests are administered by the Instituto Cervantes ecosystem. They report results differently (SIELE: 0 to 1000 numeric score; DELE: pass / fail per CEFR level) but map to the same Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Find your SIELE score on the CEFR scale
Per Instituto Cervantes: 0-300 = A1, 301-450 = A2, 451-625 = B1, 626-750 = B2, 751-1000 = C1. SIELE does not certify CEFR C2.
The DELE level at that CEFR is the equivalent
A SIELE 720 maps to CEFR B2, which is the same level as DELE B2. The conversion is exact at the CEFR level, not the numeric score.
Check the per-use-case acceptance
Most Spanish universities accept SIELE B2 interchangeably with DELE B2. But Spanish citizenship requires DELE A2 specifically (no SIELE substitute), and Spanish medical residency requires DELE C1 or C2 specifically.
SIELE and DELE: same family, different formats
Two things to understand before reading either result.
SIELE: a numeric multi-level score
The SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluacion de la Lengua Espanola) places you somewhere on the CEFR scale (A1 to C1) in one sitting. Four sections (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking), each scored 0 to 250, summed to 0 to 1000. Fully online and proctored, with results in ~3 weeks. Certificate valid 5 years.
Use the SIELE Score Calculator to compute your SIELE result from per-section inputs.
DELE: pass / fail per CEFR level
The DELE (Diplomas de Espanol como Lengua Extranjera) is taken at one CEFR level at a time. You pick A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2 and pass / fail at that level. Lifetime certificate. The Spanish citizenship and medical residency requirements specifically mandate DELE.
Use the DELE Score Calculator to check your pass / fail status under the strict 60/100 + 30/50 per-group rule.
SIELE score to CEFR to DELE level
Per Instituto Cervantes mapping. The conversion is at the CEFR level, not the numeric score.
| SIELE Score | CEFR | DELE Level | What this unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 751 to 1000 | C1 | DELE C1 | Spanish postgraduate (most), competitive jobs in Spanish |
| 626 to 750 | B2 | DELE B2 | Spanish university undergrad (standard threshold) |
| 451 to 625 | B1 | DELE B1 | Foundation programs, work permits, au-pair |
| 301 to 450 | A2 | DELE A2 | Spanish citizenship via DELE A2 (DELE only, not SIELE) |
| 0 to 300 | A1 | DELE A1 | Initial residence, tourism, basic exchanges |
| N / A | C2 | DALE C2 | Spanish medical residency, top academic positions (DELE only) |
SIELE does not certify CEFR C2 by design (test ceiling is C1). For C2 proof, take DALE C2 directly.
When the conversion is enough vs when DELE is required
Most use cases accept the CEFR equivalence regardless of which test produced it. Two important exceptions where DELE is the only option:
The Spanish naturalisation law specifically names DELE as the language certificate. SIELE A2-equivalent score (~301-450) is not accepted. Citizens of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt entirely.
The Spanish Ministry of Health specifies DELE for non-Spanish-speaking foreign doctors. SIELE C1 score (~751+) does not satisfy this requirement. Affects all foreign-trained doctors applying to MIR placements in Spain.
Most public and private Spanish universities accept SIELE B2 (~626+) interchangeably with DELE B2 for undergraduate admission. Verify with the specific university.
Most Spanish master's and PhD programs accept SIELE C1 (~751+) interchangeably with DELE C1. A few highly competitive Sciences and Medicine programs specify DELE.
CRUE Latin American partner universities accept either certificate at the CEFR equivalent level. Some Mexican and Argentinian universities specifically prefer SIELE because UNAM and UBA co-administer the test.
For workplace Spanish certification, both certificates are equally recognised. SIELE is often preferred when faster results matter (3 weeks vs 3 months).
SIELE to DELE questions, answered
How do I convert my SIELE score to a DELE level?
Both SIELE and DELE are aligned to the CEFR scale, so SIELE scores map to DELE levels via the shared CEFR mapping. SIELE 0 to 300 = A1, 301 to 450 = A2, 451 to 625 = B1, 626 to 750 = B2, 751 to 1000 = C1. SIELE does not certify CEFR C2; for C2 proof of Spanish, take DALE C2 directly. The conversion is indicative: SIELE gives a numeric score, while DELE is pass / fail per level. Universities and immigration programs accept the CEFR equivalence regardless of which test produced it (with the citizenship and medical residency exceptions noted below).
Can I use a SIELE certificate where DELE is required?
Sometimes, but not always. Most Spanish and Latin American universities accept SIELE B2 (626+) interchangeably with DELE B2 for undergraduate admission, and SIELE C1 (751+) for postgraduate. However, two key exceptions: Spanish citizenship by naturalisation requires DELE A2 specifically (SIELE A2-equivalent score is NOT accepted), and Spanish medical residency requires DELE C1 or C2 specifically (SIELE C1 score is NOT accepted). For those two use cases, you must take DELE.
What is the CEFR equivalence between SIELE and DELE?
Per Instituto Cervantes (which administers both tests): SIELE 751-1000 = DELE C1; SIELE 626-750 = DELE B2; SIELE 451-625 = DELE B1; SIELE 301-450 = DELE A2; SIELE 0-300 = DELE A1. DELE C2 has no SIELE equivalent because SIELE does not certify above C1.
Why does SIELE not have a C2 level?
SIELE was designed as a single-sitting multilevel test that places candidates from A1 to C1, with a focus on accurate measurement across the most commonly tested levels. C2 (Mastery) requires more specialised tasks (synthesis from multiple complex sources, near-native register switching) that are difficult to assess in a 3-hour online exam. For C2 certification of Spanish, candidates take DALE C2, the dedicated C2-level Cervantes diploma.
How long are SIELE and DELE certificates valid?
DELE certificates never expire. SIELE certificates are valid for 5 years from the test date. This is one of the main practical differences when converting: a SIELE score might be the right CEFR level today, but the certificate has a shelf life. DELE certificates can be used decades later as proof of the certified level.
Should I take SIELE or DELE based on my goal?
For Spanish citizenship by naturalisation: DELE A2 (no SIELE substitute). For Spanish medical residency: DELE C1 or C2 (no SIELE substitute). For Spanish university admission (most programs): either, with most programs accepting B2-equivalent scores. For fast online testing with quick results: SIELE (3 weeks vs 3 months for DELE). For a lifetime certificate: DELE. For C2 certification: DELE C2 (DALE) only.
Is SIELE accepted at Spanish universities like DELE?
Yes, by all 76 Spanish universities under CRUE (the Spanish university rectors body), and by most Latin American universities through the Asociacion Universitaria Iberoamericana de Postgrado. The acceptance is per-level: SIELE 626+ (B2-equivalent) for undergraduate admission, SIELE 751+ (C1-equivalent) for most postgraduate programs. Always verify with the specific university; some highly competitive programs (Sciences and Medicine specifically) require DELE.
Why is my SIELE score on a different scale (1000) than my DELE result (Apto)?
They are deliberately different formats serving different purposes. SIELE is a multi-level scoring test (0 to 1000) that places you on the CEFR scale wherever your skills land in one sitting; the certificate shows the numeric score and the corresponding CEFR level. DELE is a level-specific exam: you choose which CEFR level to attempt (A1 through C2), and the result is Apto (pass) or No Apto (fail) at that level. The CEFR scale is the common reference that lets you convert between them.
