DET maps to CEFR via Duolingo concordance research
Duolingo published the DET to CEFR mapping in 2020 alongside concordance studies validating DET scores against IELTS and TOEFL iBT. The mapping below uses Duolingo official ranges.
Read your DET overall as a CEFR level
Per Duolingo: 160 = C2; 140 to 155 = C1; 120 to 135 = B2; 95 to 115 = B1; 70 to 90 = A2; below 70 = A1.
Treat the result as university-admission evidence only
The DET is accepted at 5,800+ universities for academic English requirements. It is NOT accepted by UK Home Office (UKVI), Canadian IRCC, Australian DHA, or US State Department for visa English requirements.
Confirm your target university accepts the DET
Most large universities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia accept the DET. A small number of high-end programs (some Ivy League PhDs, German Studienkollegs) still require IELTS or TOEFL. Verify via the Duolingo accepting institutions list.
DET and CEFR: an at-home test, a recognised framework
A short primer on each scale before reading the conversion table.
DET: a 1-hour at-home AI-proctored test
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is taken online from home in about 1 hour using your laptop and webcam. AI proctoring monitors the session; results are delivered in 2 calendar days. Adaptive item selection (the test gets harder or easier as you respond), AI-only scoring with periodic human review for fairness audits. Cost is around $59 to $65 in 2026 (roughly one-quarter the cost of IELTS or TOEFL).
Use the Duolingo Test Score Calculator to estimate your DET overall from per-skill sub-scores.
CEFR: 6-level qualitative framework
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines 6 levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) used by European universities, EU institutions, and most international employers. Duolingo published a DET to CEFR mapping alongside concordance studies validating DET scores against IELTS and TOEFL iBT. The single 160 endpoint corresponds to C2 (Mastery), the ceiling of CEFR.
Cross-check via IELTS using the Duolingo to IELTS Converter if your target university publishes IELTS thresholds rather than DET.
Duolingo English Test score to CEFR level
Per Duolingo concordance research. The mapping uses the DET overall score; per-skill sub-scores follow the same scale.
| DET Score | CEFR | University tier | What this unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 160 | C2 | Top-tier ready | Top postgraduate programs at any DET-accepting university |
| 140 to 155 | C1 | Most postgrad ready | Most master's and PhD programs at DET-accepting universities (Yale, Columbia, Duke, Imperial, Toronto) |
| 120 to 135 | B2 | Standard undergrad ready | Most Bachelor programs at DET-accepting universities, MBA pathways, NYU, ASU, USC |
| 95 to 115 | B1 | Foundation / pathway | Foundation, pathway, and conditional admission at DET-accepting universities |
| 70 to 90 | A2 | Below most degree thresholds | Below typical degree-credit thresholds at DET-accepting universities |
| < 70 | < A1 to A1 | Below admission | Below most academic admission thresholds, build study plan |
DET is for university admission only and is NOT accepted by UKVI, IRCC, Australian DHA, or US State Department for visa English requirements.
Where DET is accepted (and where you need a different test)
DET is accepted at 5,800+ universities for academic admission. Visa programs do not accept the DET, regardless of the CEFR level it represents.
Most US universities accept DET 100 to 130 (CEFR B2) for undergraduate and 120 to 145 (CEFR B2 high to C1) for postgraduate. Some Ivy League programs and competitive PhDs still require TOEFL iBT specifically; verify per program.
UK universities widely accept DET for academic admission. Typical thresholds: DET 110+ (B2) for undergraduate, DET 125+ (B2 high) for postgraduate. Note: DET is not on the UKVI SELT list, so a separate IELTS for UKVI may still be needed for the visa.
Canadian universities accept DET for academic admission at the same CEFR thresholds as IELTS. Note: for the post-graduation work permit and PR pathway, IELTS GT or CELPIP-General is needed; the DET does not qualify for IRCC.
Australian universities accept DET for academic admission. Note: Australian student visa (subclass 500) requires IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Cambridge for the visa English requirement; DET does not qualify for the student visa English requirement at most embassies.
UKVI requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT). DET is NOT on the SELT list. For UK student or skilled worker visas, take IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, or Trinity ISE.
IRCC accepts only IELTS GT, CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada, and TCF Canada. The DET is NOT on the IRCC list, even for the post-graduation work permit pathway.
Duolingo to CEFR questions, answered
How do I convert my Duolingo English Test score to a CEFR level?
The Duolingo English Test (DET) reports a 10 to 160 score in 5-point increments. Per Duolingo concordance research: 160 = C2; 140 to 155 = C1; 120 to 135 = B2; 95 to 115 = B1; 70 to 90 = A2; below 70 = A1. The mapping was published by Duolingo and validated against IELTS and TOEFL iBT score concordance studies. The DET overall is the average of four sub-scores (Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, Production), each on the same 10 to 160 scale.
Can I use my Duolingo English Test score for university admission?
Yes, at over 5,800 universities worldwide that accept the DET. This includes Yale, Columbia, Duke, NYU, Imperial College London, University of Toronto, ETH Zurich, and most large public and private universities in North America, Australia, and the UK. The DET became broadly accepted from 2020 onward (initially as a pandemic-era at-home alternative to TOEFL and IELTS). However, acceptance is not universal: some Ivy League programs, some specialised European universities, and most German Studienkollegs still require IELTS or TOEFL. Always check the specific university.
Can I use Duolingo English Test for visa applications?
No, mostly not. UK Home Office (UKVI), Canadian IRCC, Australian DHA, and US Department of State do NOT accept the DET for visa English requirements. UKVI requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT); IRCC requires CELPIP, IELTS GT, PTE Core, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada; Australian DHA requires IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Cambridge. The DET is for university admission English requirements only, not for visa English requirements (which are usually separate from the academic admission and require an in-person test centre).
What is the official Duolingo to CEFR mapping?
Per Duolingo concordance research: 160 = CEFR C2 (Mastery). 140 to 155 = CEFR C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency). 120 to 135 = CEFR B2 (Vantage). 95 to 115 = CEFR B1 (Threshold). 70 to 90 = CEFR A2 (Waystage). Below 70 = CEFR A1 (Breakthrough). The mapping is overall-only; per-skill DET sub-scores follow the same scale but represent component skills (Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, Production).
How long is a Duolingo English Test certificate valid?
DET scores are valid for 2 years from the test date for university admission, in line with IELTS and TOEFL. Universities apply their own validity (most commonly 2 years). The CEFR level itself does not expire, but most institutions require a recent test because language proficiency can fade. The DET cert is delivered electronically; you send your result directly to universities through Duolingo, no separate score-report mailing required.
Why is the Duolingo English Test cheaper and faster than IELTS or TOEFL?
The DET is fully online, taken at home with AI-only proctoring (camera, screen recording, automated review), and completes in about 1 hour. IELTS and TOEFL require in-person test centres with trained proctors, human raters for Speaking and Writing, and dedicated exam slots. The DET cost is roughly $59 to $65 in 2026 vs $245 to $300 for IELTS or TOEFL. Results are delivered in 2 calendar days vs 3 to 13 days for traditional tests. The trade-off is narrower acceptance: many universities accept the DET, but visa programs do not.
Is Duolingo English Test as rigorous as IELTS or TOEFL?
The DET uses adaptive item selection and AI scoring; the test gets harder or easier as you respond, so two test-takers see different items. Duolingo publishes psychometric evidence (test-retest reliability, concordance with IELTS and TOEFL) consistent with traditional tests for an overall score, though item-by-item granularity is less transparent than IELTS or TOEFL. For most universities, the DET is treated as equivalent to a CEFR-converted IELTS or TOEFL score. For high-stakes admission decisions or specific PhD programs, some institutions still require IELTS or TOEFL specifically.
Should I take Duolingo English Test, IELTS, or TOEFL based on my goal?
For US, Canadian, UK, or Australian university admission with no visa-related English requirement: DET is the cheapest and fastest option, accepted at 5,800+ universities. For applications that combine university admission AND a visa English requirement: take a recognised in-person test (IELTS for UKVI, TOEFL iBT for the US, IELTS Academic or PTE Academic for Australia) so one test covers both. For high-end programs (some Ivy League PhDs, German Studienkollegs, specialised European universities): TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic, since DET acceptance is narrower at the very top end.
