How the conversion works

IELTS and PTE Academic use different scales for overlapping skills

Both tests measure academic English. They report results differently (IELTS: 0 to 9 by 0.5 per skill; PTE: 10 to 90 by 1 across an integrated scoring model) but Pearson research provides the standard concordance.

1.

Find your IELTS band in the concordance table

IELTS 7.0 corresponds to PTE 65 to 72. The Pearson concordance research is the most cited reference; it averages performance across thousands of dual-test candidates.

2.

The PTE score range at that band is the equivalent

A PTE 65 is the lower bound for Australian PR Proficient English; a PTE 72 is comfortably within the Proficient tier. Where you land depends on per-skill performance.

3.

Check the per-program threshold

Australian PR Proficient English: PTE 65 / IELTS 7.0 each skill (10 points). Superior English: PTE 79 / IELTS 8.0 each skill (20 points). UK Home Office: per-visa threshold typically PTE 51 to 65.

Background

IELTS and PTE Academic: same destination, different format

Two things to understand before reading either result.

IELTS Academic: human Speaking, paper or computer

The IELTS Academic is co-owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS Australia, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Available in paper-based and computer-delivered formats. The Speaking section is always a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. Mix of British, Australian, North American, and other accents in audio. Scores reported as 0 to 9 by 0.5 per skill.

Use the IELTS Band Score Calculator to compute your IELTS overall band from per-skill scores.

PTE Academic: AI-scored, fast, fully computer-delivered

PTE Academic is administered by Pearson. Fully computer-delivered including Speaking (recorded into a microphone, scored by AI). Results in 2 business days. Integrated scoring model means a single response can contribute to multiple skill scores. Test centres in over 200 countries. Accepted by all Australian universities, the Australian government for PR and student visas, the UK Home Office, and over 3,500 institutions worldwide.

IELTS BandCEFRPTE AcademicWhat this unlocks
9.0 C2 86 to 90 Top universities; Australian PR Superior English (20 points)
8.5 C2 83 to 85 Australian PR Superior English (20 points); top US/UK graduate
8.0 C1 79 to 82 Australian PR Superior English (20 points); top graduate programs
7.5 C1 73 to 78 Most graduate programs; competitive professional registration
7.0 C1 65 to 72 Australian PR Proficient English (10 points); most graduate programs
6.5 B2 58 to 64 Most undergraduate programs; UK Tier 4 visa
6.0 B2 50 to 57 Australian PR Competent English; some undergraduate programs
5.5 B1 42 to 49 Foundation programs; pre-sessional language programs

Australian PR thresholds are per-skill (not overall). All four skills must meet or exceed the target PTE score for the points tier to apply.

Per use case

When to switch to PTE vs when to stay with IELTS

Both tests are widely accepted. The decision usually depends on speed, format preference, and the exact program list.

Australian Permanent Residence (skilled migration)
Both accepted, per-skill thresholds

PTE Academic and IELTS are accepted equally for Competent (PTE 50 / IELTS 6.0 each skill), Proficient (PTE 65 / IELTS 7.0 each, 10 points), and Superior English (PTE 79 / IELTS 8.0 each, 20 points). The 10-point gap between Proficient and Superior often determines visa eligibility.

Australian universities
Both accepted

All Australian universities accept PTE Academic and IELTS Academic. Typical undergraduate threshold: PTE 58 to 65 / IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. Typical graduate threshold: PTE 65 to 79 / IELTS 7.0 to 7.5.

UK Home Office (student and work visas)
Both accepted

PTE Academic and IELTS for UKVI are both Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved. Student route typically requires PTE 59+ or IELTS for UKVI 5.5+. Verify per visa category.

Tight deadlines (results in 2 days)
PTE wins on speed

PTE results return in 2 business days. IELTS results take 3 to 5 days for computer-delivered or up to 13 days for paper-based. For visa renewals or late application deadlines, PTE is the practical pick.

US graduate programs
IELTS more widely accepted than PTE

Most US graduate programs accept TOEFL and IELTS; PTE Academic acceptance at US universities has grown but is less universal. If your target list is US-heavy, IELTS gives broader coverage.

Canadian Permanent Residence (Express Entry)
IELTS GT only, NOT PTE Academic

IRCC does NOT accept PTE Academic for Express Entry. The accepted English tests are IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, and PTE Core (a different test from PTE Academic). For Canadian PR, take IELTS GT or PTE Core, not PTE Academic.

Frequently asked

IELTS to PTE questions, answered

How do I convert my IELTS band to a PTE Academic score?

IELTS Academic and PTE Academic measure overlapping academic English skills. Per Pearson concordance research: IELTS 9.0 = PTE 86 to 90; IELTS 8.5 = PTE 83 to 85; IELTS 8.0 = PTE 79 to 82; IELTS 7.5 = PTE 73 to 78; IELTS 7.0 = PTE 65 to 72; IELTS 6.5 = PTE 58 to 64; IELTS 6.0 = PTE 50 to 57; IELTS 5.5 = PTE 42 to 49. The conversion is approximate; PTE Academic uses an integrated scoring model that weighs different skills together, so the mapping should be used as a sanity check, not as proof of equivalence.

Why do candidates switch from IELTS to PTE?

Three common reasons. First, PTE results return in 2 business days vs 3 to 13 days for IELTS, which matters for tight visa or application deadlines. Second, PTE Speaking is recorded into a microphone and scored by AI, which many candidates find less stressful than the IELTS face-to-face interview. Third, PTE Academic test slots are often available within a week, while IELTS slots can be booked up months in advance in major cities. The most common downside: PTE Writing has strict word counts and AI grammar scoring that some candidates find harder than IELTS handwriting.

What PTE score do I need for Australian Permanent Residence?

Australian PR uses per-skill PTE thresholds. Per the Department of Home Affairs as of August 2025: Competent English requires PTE 50 in each skill (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing), equivalent to IELTS 6.0 across the board. Proficient English requires PTE 65 each (IELTS 7.0 each), worth 10 points on the points test. Superior English requires PTE 79 each (IELTS 8.0 each), worth 20 points. The 10-point gap between Proficient and Superior often determines visa eligibility.

Should I take PTE if I already have an IELTS score?

Take PTE only if: (1) your IELTS score is below the program threshold and you suspect you would do better on PTE format (faster pacing, AI Speaking, fully computer-delivered); (2) you have a tight deadline and need results in 2 days; or (3) your target program lists PTE preferentially. Otherwise, stick with IELTS. Taking both tests is expensive and rarely necessary. The conversion table tells you whether your IELTS score already meets your target program PTE minimum.

Why does IELTS 7.0 map to a range of PTE scores?

Because the two tests use different scoring distributions. IELTS uses 0 to 9 by 0.5 (19 levels). PTE Academic uses 10 to 90 by 1 (81 levels). A single IELTS half-band corresponds to multiple PTE scores. The Pearson concordance gives a range to reflect this resolution mismatch. Where in the range you land depends on per-skill performance, not the overall IELTS band alone.

Is PTE Academic accepted at universities everywhere?

Mostly. PTE Academic is accepted by all Australian universities, the Australian government for PR and student visas, the UK Home Office for visas, the New Zealand government, and over 3,500 institutions worldwide. The most common gaps: some Canadian universities still prefer IELTS, Canadian Permanent Residence (Express Entry) does NOT accept PTE Academic (only IELTS GT, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core), and some US graduate programs (especially older or more conservative departments) only accept TOEFL or IELTS. Always verify with the specific program.

Is IELTS or PTE easier?

Different, not easier. PTE rewards balanced performance across skills (the integrated scoring model can lift weaker areas if your stronger areas are very strong), fast computer-based pacing, and comfort with AI Speaking and Writing scoring. IELTS rewards clear isolated performance per section, comfortable handwriting, and the ability to perform in a face-to-face Speaking interview. Take a practice test in each format. If your practice PTE score (when converted to IELTS via this table) is meaningfully higher than your IELTS, switch.

Are IELTS and PTE scores valid for the same period?

Both are valid for 2 years from the test date for academic and visa purposes. Australian PR specifically uses scores up to 3 years old in the points test, but only if the score is still valid at the time of EOI submission. Plan to test 4 to 6 months before your target deadline to allow time for retakes if needed.
