What is SIELE and how is it scored?
Two things every candidate should understand before reading their result.
SIELE: Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española
The SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) is a fully online, proctored Spanish proficiency test administered jointly by four institutions: the Instituto Cervantes, the University of Salamanca, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the University of Buenos Aires. Unlike DELE (a level-specific lifetime diploma), SIELE gives you a date-stamped 0 to 1000 score across all CEFR levels in one sitting, valid for 5 years.
- Fully online and proctored, no test centre required
- Results in ~3 weeks (vs ~3 months for DELE)
- Valid for 5 years (vs lifetime for DELE; vs 2 years for IELTS / TOEFL / DELF)
- Accepted by all 76 Spanish universities (CRUE) plus 50+ universities across 19 Latin American countries
SIELE Global is the standard 4-section version covered by this calculator. Modular versions exist (S1 to S5) for candidates who only need to certify specific skills, but most universities require Global.
0 to 1000 scale, A1 to C1 (no C2)
Each section is scored 0 to 250 points; the overall is the sum (max 1000). Each section ALSO maps to a CEFR level: 0 to 32 = below A1, 33 to 99 = A1, 100 to 165 = A2, 166 to 232 = B1, 233 to 249 = B2, 250 = C1. The certificate shows BOTH the per-section CEFR and the overall numeric score.
Your effective CEFR is the lowest section level. SIELE does not certify CEFR C2 by design (the test ceiling is C1); for C2 proof of Spanish, take DELE C2 instead. Spanish universities and Spanish citizenship typically accept either DELE or SIELE depending on the level required.
How each SIELE Global section is scored
All four sections are computer-scored (Reading and Listening) or AI plus human rated (Writing and Speaking). Each section reports both a numeric score (0 to 250) and a CEFR level.
Reading (CL)
~60 min · ~38 questionsMultiple-choice questions across short and long texts: emails, ads, news articles, journalistic features, formal documents. Computer-scored. Texts cover Peninsular Spanish, Mexican Spanish, and various Latin American Spanish dialects deliberately. The 250-point ceiling rewards inference and rhetorical purpose questions, not just literal comprehension.
Listening (CA)
~55 min · ~36 questionsMultiple-choice questions on dialogues, monologues, news bulletins, formal speeches, academic lectures. Computer-scored. Audio includes Peninsular, Mexican, Argentinian, Colombian, and Caribbean Spanish accents. CL audio plays once. Inference questions (speaker tone, intent) are the gap between B1 and B2.
Writing (EIE)
~50 min · 2 tasksTwo integrated writing tasks of increasing complexity: an interactive short response (e.g., reply to a message, 100 words) and a longer formal text (e.g., article or essay, 200 to 250 words). AI plus human rater scoring against content, organization, accuracy, and range. Going significantly under the word count loses content points.
Speaking (EIO)
~15 min · 5 tasksFive recorded tasks into a microphone (no examiner): personal introduction, picture description, narrative, opinion expression, formal interaction (role-play). AI plus human rater scoring. Pronunciation matters less than fluency, organization, and topic development. Use the full response window; silence costs more than imperfect grammar.
What your SIELE score unlocks
SIELE is widely accepted for Spanish university admission and for many Spanish-speaking employers. NOT accepted for Spanish citizenship or medical residency (those require DELE).
Top postgraduate + competitive jobs
C1 across all four sections (250 each). Required by competitive Spanish university postgraduate programs and many Spanish-speaking professional positions. Equivalent to DELE C1 for most acceptance purposes.
Spanish postgraduate admission
Standard for most master's and PhD programs at Spanish universities (Universidad Complutense, Universidad de Barcelona, Universidad de Salamanca, etc.). Around the IELTS 7.0 to 7.5 equivalent for English. Sufficient for most Spanish-speaking professional roles.
Spanish undergraduate + many master's
The standard threshold for Spanish university undergraduate admission. Many master's programs accept this range with a per-section minimum of 166+ in each (B1 minimum across the board).
Foundation programs + entry-level
Sufficient for Spanish foundation / pathway programs and entry-level Spanish-speaking customer service roles. Below most direct undergraduate thresholds; some universities offer conditional admission with English-track support.
Basic everyday Spanish use
Below most academic and skilled-work thresholds. For Spanish citizenship by naturalisation, take DELE A2 directly (SIELE is not accepted for citizenship).
Below most thresholds
Below the threshold for nearly all degree-credit programs and most Spanish-speaking workplace certification. Significant additional Spanish study recommended before retaking.
SIELE per-section CEFR mapping
Per-section CEFR thresholds (per Instituto Cervantes). Each section is scored 0 to 250; the overall is the sum (max 1000).
| Per-section score (0–250) | CEFR | Overall equivalent (4×) | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | C1 | 1000 | Effective Operational Proficiency (advanced) |
| 233–249 | B2 | 932–996 | Vantage / Upper Intermediate (high) |
| 166–232 | B1 | 664–928 | Threshold (intermediate) |
| 100–165 | A2 | 400–660 | Waystage (elementary) |
| 33–99 | A1 | 132–396 | Breakthrough (beginner) |
| 0–32 | below A1 | 0–128 | Below threshold |

One concrete tip per section
Skill-specific advice for moving 600-range candidates to 800+ (the typical postgraduate Spanish admission threshold).
Reading (Comprensión de Lectura), drill paraphrasing precision
SIELE B2 to C1 Reading rewards inference across multiple text types. Many questions test whether you understood a paraphrased argument, not the literal sentence. Practice rewriting paragraphs from El País, Clarín (Argentina), or El Universal (Mexico) in your own words; the active rewriting habit transfers directly to the comprehension sub-tasks.
Listening (Comprensión Auditiva), train accent variety
SIELE Listening uses Peninsular Spanish, Mexican, Argentinian, Colombian, and Caribbean accents. Most learners over-train on one accent. At B2 and above, deliberately listen to RTVE (Spain), Radio Mitre (Argentina), Caracol Radio (Colombia), and CNN en Español (mixed); the accent breadth is the gap between marginal pass and confident pass.
Writing (Expresión e Interacción Escritas), hit the structure exactly
SIELE Writing has 2 tasks: an interactive short response (~100 words) and a longer formal text (200 to 250 words). Each rewards clear structure: opening that frames the response, 2 to 3 body points with examples, conclusion. Time-box: 15 min task 1, 30 min task 2, 5 min proofreading.
Speaking (Expresión e Interacción Orales), fill the response window fully
SIELE Speaking is 5 recorded tasks into a microphone (no examiner). Each has a fixed-length recording window and rewards continuous fluent speech. Build a default response template per task type: state position, give 2 supporting reasons with examples, conclude with forward-looking statement. Use the full window; silence costs more than imperfect grammar.
SIELE scoring questions, answered
How is the SIELE Global score calculated?
SIELE Global is the sum of four section scores, each from 0 to 250 points: Reading Comprehension (CL), Listening Comprehension (CA), Writing Expression and Interaction (EIE), and Speaking Expression and Interaction (EIO). The total ranges from 0 to 1000. Each section also maps to a CEFR level (A1 through C1; SIELE does not certify C2). Your effective CEFR is the lowest section level: a single weak section caps your overall CEFR rating regardless of how strong the others are.
What is a good SIELE score?
A good SIELE score depends on your goal. Spanish university undergraduate admission typically accepts SIELE B2 (~600+ overall, ~166+ per section). Postgraduate Spanish programs often expect SIELE C1 (~800+ overall, ~233+ per section). Spanish-speaking employers in international corporations often prefer 700+. Below 400 (~A2) the score is below most academic and skilled-work thresholds; consider DELE A2 directly for citizenship purposes.
How does SIELE convert to CEFR?
SIELE per-section CEFR mapping (per section out of 250, per Instituto Cervantes): 0 to 32 = below A1, 33 to 99 = A1, 100 to 165 = A2, 166 to 232 = B1, 233 to 249 = B2, 250 = C1. SIELE does not certify CEFR C2 by design; for C2 proof of Spanish, take DELE C2 instead. Your effective CEFR is the lowest section level, since the certificate shows per-section CEFR alongside the overall score.
How long is a SIELE score valid?
SIELE certificates are valid for 5 years from the test date. This is significantly longer than IELTS, TOEFL, or DELF / DALF (2 years), and is one of SIELE's main advantages for students whose academic plans span multiple years. After 5 years you must retake the test if your application is still in process or being submitted.
What is the difference between SIELE Global and the modular SIELE versions?
SIELE Global is the standard 4-section test (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, max 1000) and the version this calculator covers. SIELE also offers individual modules: S1 = Reading + Listening (max 500), S2 = Reading + Writing (max 500), S3 = Listening + Speaking (max 500), S4 = Speaking only (max 250), S5 = Writing + Speaking (max 500). Modular versions are cheaper but less widely accepted; most universities require SIELE Global. If you only need to certify specific skills, modules can save time and money.
SIELE vs DELE, which should I take?
DELE is a level-specific lifetime diploma; SIELE is a date-stamped 0 to 1000 score across all CEFR levels in one sitting (valid 5 years). Choose DELE for Spanish citizenship (A2 required), Spanish medical residency (C1 or C2 required), and any use case where a permanent certificate is needed. Choose SIELE for Spanish university admission (most universities accept both, SIELE is faster and online-proctored). Many candidates take SIELE first to benchmark, then DELE for the lifetime certificate at the level they confirmed.
Is SIELE accepted by universities?
Yes, by all 76 Spanish universities under CRUE (Conferencia de Rectores de las Universidades Españolas, 50 public + 26 private), and by 50+ universities across the 19 Latin American countries. Also accepted by Spanish-speaking universities in Canada, China, and South Korea. SIELE is administered jointly by the Instituto Cervantes, the University of Salamanca, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the University of Buenos Aires.
How long is the SIELE Global test?
SIELE Global takes approximately 3 hours total: Reading Comprehension (~60 min, ~38 questions), Listening Comprehension (~55 min, ~36 questions), Writing Expression and Interaction (~50 min, 2 tasks), and Speaking Expression and Interaction (~15 min, 5 tasks recorded into a microphone). Fully computer-based and online-proctored. Results delivered within 3 weeks (significantly faster than DELE, which takes ~3 months).
